The Alternaria alternata allergy test is a blood test that checks for an allergic response to Alternaria alternata, a common outdoor and indoor mold. It is usually ordered when a person has ongoing allergy or asthma symptoms and a clinician wants to see whether this mold may be a trigger.

What it measures

  • Alternaria alternata specific IgE — The main marker; shows whether your immune system makes IgE antibodies to this mold.
  • Total IgE — Sometimes measured alongside to give overall allergy context, though it does not identify a specific trigger.
  • Other mold specific IgE — May be tested together to compare reactions to different molds.
  • Other allergen specific IgE — May be included in a panel to look for additional triggers such as pollen or dust mites.

Who it is for

A clinician such as an allergist, primary care provider, or pulmonologist may order this test for people with persistent sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, or asthma symptoms that could be linked to mold exposure.

Preparation

No fasting is required. Tell your clinician about any antihistamines or other medicines you take, because some can affect allergy testing.

Results and what they mean

Results are reported as a level or class for Alternaria alternata specific IgE, often alongside other allergens tested. A clinician interprets the number together with your symptoms and history, since a positive result alone does not always mean you have symptoms from this mold. This is general information, not medical advice; discuss your results with a qualified healthcare professional.

Does a positive result mean I am allergic to mold?

It means your immune system has made antibodies to Alternaria alternata. Whether that causes symptoms depends on your history and exposure, so a clinician interprets the result with you.

How long do results take?

Most results are available within 1 to 3 business days, though timing can vary by laboratory.

Do I need to fast before this test?

No. Fasting is not needed for this blood test.

Can this test tell me where the mold is coming from?

No. It only shows sensitivity to Alternaria alternata. A clinician can help you consider possible sources of exposure.
